Don’t forget you and your colleagues are experts when it comes down to your company’s products. You have more expertise about your products than any third party certification body. First, let’s look at what a certification body does. A certification body verifies the compliance of a product by conducting a conformity assessment. It also ensures that the technical documentation sufficiently supports product compliance. And when the certification body is convinced of product compliance, it issues a certificate to confirm this.
In order to be able to give this confirmation, the certification body’s assessors not only need to know the product requirements, but they also need to have a thorough understanding how the requirements apply to a great variety of products. Actually, the biggest challenge for a certification body is related to getting and maintaining its expertise for many different products.

You only have to focus on your products. While a certification body needs to spend a lot of time learning about your product, you already know all about that. Is CE Self-Certification legal?
Many people don’t realize this, but for close to 90% of the products, the CE regulations allow self-certification. Only for a few products it is required to have the conformity certified by a third party. Let’s take machinery as an example: only 17 groups of high-risk machinery (such as sawing machines and press machines with manual loading/unloading) are required to be certified by a third party. Electrical equipment in most cases does not need to be tested and certified by a third party certification body, if the manufacturer applies the available European harmonized standards. Isn’t it just easier to have the CE marking done by a certification body?
This is where many people go wrong. They think that when they go to a certification body that they don’t have to do anything about CE marking. But the opposite is true.
As said before, a certification body only verifies compliance. And they will tell you if your product fails or is approved. A certification body is not allowed to provide consultancy. So they cannot help you to get your product in compliance if it is not.
And before a certification body can start, you’ll need to provide them with a fully prepared Technical File. And of course you want to increase your chances that your product passes the tests and verifications the first time, so you’ll not have to pay again for re-testing and re-verifications. But this means that you have to check your design against the essential requirements and provisions of the standards, and that you prepare the test sample and documentation accordingly.
All together I would say that it is at least as much work to have the CE certification done by a 3rd party than to do CE self-certification.
